WhatsApp for auto repair

WhatsApp is the default communication channel in India. If you're running a workshop and not using it properly, you're losing customers. Here is the clear version — what's allowed, what works, and how to set it up.

Free personal WhatsApp ≠ WhatsApp Business API

There are three tiers:

TierCostAutomationRisk
Personal WhatsAppFreeNoneAccount can be banned for business use
WhatsApp Business appFreeBasic templatesSingle phone only, no integration
WhatsApp Business APIPer-message costFull automation + CRM integrationZero ban risk when used properly

For any workshop doing 20+ jobs a day, the API is the only right answer. Personal WhatsApp accounts used for business messaging get banned. Regularly.

What you can (and can't) send via the API

Allowed: template messages for transactional updates

  • Booking confirmation
  • Estimate approval request
  • "Ready for pickup" notification
  • Invoice copy
  • Service reminder (3/6/12 month)
  • Feedback request

All of these are pre-approved templates submitted to Meta in advance.

Allowed: replies within a 24-hour window

If a customer messages you, you have 24 hours to respond freely (no template needed). Most service advisor chats happen in this window.

Not allowed: unsolicited promotional blasts

Sending "diwali offer 10% off" to 1,000 past customers without opt-in will get your number suspended.

Setup essentials

  1. Get a dedicated business phone number — don't use the owner's personal number.
  2. Verify your business with Meta (Business Verification).
  3. Submit your core templates — aim for 6-10 to cover the main workflows.
  4. Integrate with your GMS — not a standalone tool.

What good integration looks like

The GMS auto-sends WhatsApp messages at key points:

  • Booking made → confirmation
  • Job card created → walk-around photos + estimate
  • Estimate approved → technician starts
  • QC passed → ready-for-pickup
  • Invoice settled → thank-you + feedback link

No human clicks. No forgotten follow-ups.

Cost

Meta charges per-message, around ₹0.30–₹0.50 for utility templates in India. For a typical 50-job-a-day workshop, total WhatsApp spend is <₹3,000/month — a fraction of the retention lift.

Getting started

GetAFix has official WhatsApp Business API integration built in, with pre-approved templates for all standard workshop workflows. Setup takes 2-3 days including Meta verification. Book a demo.
